HOUSEHOLD LATRINES
The benefits of having a family latrine are well known. In addition to its obvious health benefits, the presence of a personal latrine positively impacts the dignity of those who have one. In 2025, we will continue our vision that every household on the island has a latrine. Our model for achieving this is to help one village at a time reach 100% household coverage. We have identified Boucan Lamare, a 783-home village, that has embraced this vision for 2025. Goal: to celebrate with the village when all its homes have a latrine.
Cost: $62,640 ($80 per latrine)

MORINGA PROCESSING FACILITY Project

MORINGA PROCESSING FACILITY

The popularity of locally-grown Moringa oleifera as a high-nutrition food supplement has increased, especially given the current food insecurity. Fresh moringa leaves from trees growing at our schools are being added to school meals, enhancing nutritional value. However, moringa leaves lose their freshness soon after harvesting, so they cannot be sold fresh at the market. We are committed to constructing a state-of-the-art moringa processing facility on La Gonave. This facility will produce enough moringa powder to supplement the diets of every person on the island.
Cost: $60,000

Our goal is to furnish two Starfysh schools in time for the start of school in Fall 2025. Delivery will depend on Haitian ports reopening.

TREE PLANTING DISTRIBUTION Project

TREE PLANTING/DISTRIBUTION

Hunger is a dire issue on La Gonave, where food insecurity is at emergency levels. In addition to providing immediate aid, we are focusing on equipping people to grow food for their families. Our goal for 2025 is to produce and distribute 1,000 lbs of vegetable seeds (205 lbs distributed in 2024) and 15,000 trees (9,000 planted/distributed in 2024).

Cost: $50,000

GARDEN WELL

To expand our seedling-production capacity, we need more water than can be captured and stored from rainfall. We require two wells: one at our sea-level nursery campus (funded and underway) and one at our mountain campus, which still needs funding.

Cost: $15,000

MOBILE STARLINK

In the past, La Gonave’s remoteness and lack of dependable, high-speed communication infrastructure made it nearly impossible to connect our two worlds. Now, with satellite internet technology, it’s possible to live-stream from even the most remote locations on the island. This new capacity will make an enormous difference in Starfysh’s ability to connect partners and donors with people and projects across La Gonave. Coming in 2025: Mobile Starlink Internet, powered by a solar-powered mobile generator.

Cost: $10,000
